RAW drive recovery

Summary

RAW drive recovery is the data recovery process from a hard drive, a camera memory card, an USB flash drive, etc. that was not formatted and shown "RAW" file system in disk properties.

The step-by-step tutorial below describes the procedure to recover RAW drive when

• Invalid media type reading drive. Abort, Retry, Fail?
• File system is displayed as "RAW".
• Windows may ask if you want to format the drive, such as a warning reads "The disk in drive (X) is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?".
• File names contain "weird" characters.
• "Sector not found" messages.
• The drive has suddenly become 0 bytes.

Step 1: Get, install, and start EaseUS free data recovery software

Download and install EaseUS free data recovery software just like you do with any regular program. When you run it, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition displays the window like the one below. And then click "Complete Recovery".

Download and install notice: please do not download and install the exe file on a partition you lost files.

Step 2: Select file types.

Step 3: Select RAW drive to scan.

Step 4: Select a partition to recover lost data.

Step 5: Preview files and save data.

Caution: Don't save file(s) to the partition or drive where you are recovering data, for it may result in overwriting data and permanent data loss!

Step 6: Format the RAW drive and copy data back.

After recovering data from RAW drive, format the RAW drive with Windows built-in format tool (Open My Computer, click the RAW drive and select "Format" to format RAW drive to NTFS/FAT file system) or free partition manager and you will find the inaccessible drive becomes accessible again. If you think it necessary, you can copy all data back to where they before.

Step 7: Don't let this happen again.

Back up your partition with free backup software.
